November is not only the month of giving thanks, it is also National Novel Writing Month, otherwise known as NaNoWriMo. The goal of the month is for students to write a novel of at least 50,000 words in 30 days.
Sigma Tau Delta, GCSU's English honor society, is encouraging its members to participate in NaNoWriMo.

From flappers to the grim reaper, fans filled Russell Auditorium in costume on the eve of Halloween last Friday. The theater echoed with sounds of audience participation. Audience members jumped to the left, then they stepped to the right to perform the Time Warp dance.

New and upcoming artists, Austin Lite and Matt Williams, sophomore business majors at GCSU, started off by creating music just for fun and have now taken a more serious approach to their hip-hop beats by selling their songs on iTunes.
"I started playing piano when I was in second-grade and composing music when I was in fourth grade," Williams said.

Twenty-five minutes after University Police were alerted a dangerous suspect was on the University Golf Course Thursday, students, faculty and staff received a UGA Alert message warning them of the danger.
University Police Chief Jimmy Williamson said decisions to activate the alert are not taken lightly.

A University System of Georgia-wide budget cut increase from 6 percent to 8 percent will result in eliminating many positions that are currently frozen according to GCSU President Dorothy Leland. An additional $150 mandatory emergency fee may be added to the existing fee, totaling $250 per student for Spring 2010 semester, according to Leland.

The search for a man who spurred a UGA Alert Thursday afternoon is over.
The University released an alert Thursday afternoon and blocked vehicles along Milledge Road after police sought an armed and dangerous suspect at the rear of the University golf course and Whitehall Road.
According to Athens-Clarke County police, the suspect, Michael Wise, 25, shot and killed himself after police stopped his car in Oglethorpe County around 3:30 p.m. He is accused of killing Kendra Borders, 20, in the parking lot of the Shops of South Athens on South Milledge Avenue. She died of a gunshot wound.

Photojournalist Haider Hamza saw the aftermath of many car bombs while covering the Iraq war.
But one day when he arrived on the scene of a bomb blast he saw a 12 year old kid, surrounded by bodies, collecting bullets and trying to sell them.
That made Hamza realize the effects of the war on the young people in Iraq.

I love words. I love the vast ways I can express myself or describe the world around me, even with a small vocabulary. Becoming an avid reader at a young age, I have a rather unusual appreciation for the building blocks of human communication. While many people dislike long words and often peg them as the discourse of the elite or stuck-up, I, by far, prefer "big words" (as they are called).
