Dare we dream that homecoming is going to be
worth attending this year?
Homecoming is a big event at most schools.
Alumni come from near and far to visit their alma
mater. It's a big fund-raising weekend for many
universities.
Although students are often involved in the
process, they don't get as much out of homecoming
weekend as the alumni. It's seen as "alumni day,"
and aside from attending the football game, current
University students just try to stay out of the way.
The All Campus Homecoming Committee is hop-
ing to change all that this year with the advent of
Dawg Fest '97. It's a bigger and better homecom-
ing, complete with parade, pep rally and musical
guest John Berry (who got his start in the bars of
Athens, by the way).
Most importantly, Dawg Fest '97 will have
pyrotechnics, something we didn't see last year.
Regardless of the event, fireworks always draw a
crowd.
The ACHC should have no problem outshining
last year's event, which was plagued by adminis-
trative errors in the homecoming queen election
and a severe case of student apathy toward a strug-
gling football team.
The parade, which went through campus last
year, didn't even have a grand marshal.
This year the parade will go through downtown
Athens instead. It should give members of the com-
munity outside the University a chance to get
involved.
If you don't think homecoming is worth your
time, we encourage you to give it another try. You
might like what you see.
Just like everybody else, we love to get mail. It
shows that you, the reader, care about what
appears in The Red an Black.
We understand that sometimes letter writers are
unwilling to attach their names to submissions.
Sometimes they make rash accusations and don't
have the guts to put a name with the argument.
Sometimes letters aren't signed because the writ-
ers fear persecution from fellow students.
Although the content of these letters is often wor-
thy of space on this page, we regret to inform you
that we cannot run anonymous letters to the editor.
It is a policy choice that we made a long time
ago. We simply have no way of knowing if anony-
mous letters are genuine.
We confirm all of our signed letters by contacting
the authors to make sure they sent what we
received. If we didn't do this, you might see a letter
with your name in the paper that you didn't write.
If there's an issue you want to see discussed on
the opinions page and you don't want your name to
appear in the paper, come talk to us. We might be
able to get another writer to cover the issue.
As it stands now, unsigned letters go straight
into the trash.
Don't let your voice go unheard. We want to
know what you think, but we need to know who
you are.
