A couple of mornings ago I was
off to a good day. It turned into a
bad one as soon as I hit the North
Campus commuter lots, however.
I considered myself having
arrived in plenty of time to find a
parking space, but it seems that I
was mistaken.
I spent well over an hour and a
half searching for the coveted park-
ing space with no success, not only
missing my first class in the
process, but my second also.
Both of these classes have atten-
dance policies, and this marks the
second time this quarter that I
have missed these classes due to
parking problems.
My question is why.
Why were two other North and
Central Campus commuter lots -
including the former commuter lot
by River Mill - closed down with
the knowledge that we would have
even more students looking for
those spaces this year?
And why was the lot by River
Mill turned into perimeter park-
ing? The existing perimeter lot
there was never full anyway.
It's great that the plans are in
the works for a parking deck on
North Campus, but don't take
parking spaces away before more
are put in.
This so-called planning is
ridiculous.
Parking services is the machine
that seems to give and take away
at will or whim, though, so my plea
is not to them.
My plea is to all of the profes-
sors and other teachers on this
campus.
Judging by the lines of cars
waiting for spaces in the commuter
lots every morning, this is not an
isolated event. When a student
misses class, please don't assume
that the student just overslept or
doesn't care.
Consider that they may be out
in the parking lots looking for
somewhere to park in hopes that
they will make the final 20 min-
utes of class.

David Mowery's column (Sept.
25) embodies everything that is
wrong with the average American
college student and your paper.
It's very warming to know that
while Mr. Mowery has about as
much common sense as a mule, his
GPA is still decent.
Although, if he truly considers a
3.06 GPA to be good and reputable
and evidence that he does not suf-
fer from his alcoholic binges, then
maybe he should re-evaluate his
worth in life.
He must have pretty low self-
esteem if all he can write about is
his alcoholic problems.
This column does nothing for me
but revitalize my opinion of your
paper.
It still works great as a place-
mat during my lunch!
