A man impersonating a police officer pulled a woman over, took her to a wooded area off College Station Road and raped her early Thursday, according to Athens-Clarke County Police.
The woman, 28, told police her attacker detained her for three and a half hours.
She told police she was driving on College Station near International Drive at 3:30 a.m. when she was pulled over by a car with a bar of flashing blue lights.
The man, who was wearing a uniform, told her she was speeding and then asked for her license and proof of insurance, police said.
He told her to get in his car, and upon entering, she realized it wasn't a police vehicle, according to police.
When she tried to get out, the man struck her and drove her to the end of an unknown street off College Station Road, where he raped and detained her, the woman told police.
She reported that after the man drove away, she drove her car to a friend's house to call police.
ACC Police Lt. Fletcher Maddox wouldn't comment at press time on whether there were any suspects, but he said no arrests have been made in the case.
The victim described her attacker as a 6'1" to 6'2" white male in his mid- to late 30s, with short brown hair, brown eyes and a slender build.
She described the man's car as a dark, possibly black, four-door vehicle - possibly a Chevrolet Monte Carlo - with ivory interior.
Maddox said police didn't know if the reported rape was connected to any other recent Athens attacks.
The scene of the reported crime was near Polo Club Condominiums, which houses many University students.
"It scares me that someone would impersonate an officer to do something as horrible as this," said Kristy Beasly, a sophomore from Atlanta and a Polo Club resident. She said she hadn't heard about the reported rape.
Nancy Zechella, director of Safe Campuses Now, said she was shocked and said students should be alert on College Station Road.
In light of the reported attack, Zechella said drivers should be sure to verify a police officer's identification before entering a vehicle.
"Make sure there is official lettering identifying the car as a police vehicle," Zechella said.
