Dance Dawgs looking for "quality"

Strap on your dancing shoes because the Dance Dawgs are having tryouts today and tomorrow. The Dance Dawgs are the basketball dance team formerly known as the Hot Shots. The team changed the name in order to become more closely linked to school spirit. “We tried to get a name associated more with Georgia athletics and sports,” said Marilou Braswell, cheer and dance team coach. Tryouts begin today at 4 p.m. at the Stegeman Coliseum Window 1. Those interested should bring proof of insurance and a physical form. Past experience isn’t required, although it is encouraged. Routines focus more on the technical aspect of dance and require dancers to perform a jazz routine as well as dance to a fight song. In addition to dance routines, dancers must perform various leaps, turns and jumps. The Dance Dawgs practice two times a week. Practices are from 3 to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Dancers will learn the material at 5 p.m. today, and from 8 to 10 p.m. there will be interviews with judges. Tomorrow, the women will perform the jazz dance and then the fight-song dance. Following the performance, dancers split into groups of three, where they will perform the leaps, turns and jumps one at a time. This year the squad’s size has been cut down. Coaches intend to have a team of 10 women. “We are looking for quality, not quantity,” said Braswell. — Mary Alison Wilshire
