Frank Black, marathon rock 'n' roll man, is still moving like he's young, and popular music be damned.

Black, the former Pixie frontman and alternative rock hero, will be in Athens with his newest group, the Catholics.

Their latest album is 1999's "Pistolero," a record that has garnered glowing press from Rolling Stone, Spin and New York Press. "Pistolero" was recorded in just over a week, with all the recording happening live, before being applied to a two-track recorder.

Black, in a letter to fans, admitted that "Pistolero" may not sound exactly like what is popular at the moment.

"I know it doesn't fit in with what's happening in the charts, on the radio in the typical, well- produced scene," he said. "But we love this whole live recording thing."

Black, a veteran of the 40 Watt Club, also has appeared on numerous compilation discs. He recently contributed music, along with the band Apples in Stereo, to a compilation album of music based on the Cartoon Network show "The Powerpuff Girls." FRANK BLACK

AND THE CATHOLICS

Performing with: "Cabaret"

When & Where: Wednesday at the 40 Watt Club at 9 p.m.

Tickets: $8 in advance

Information: 549-7871

"Heroes & Villains" is the name of the album, and it should be released by July 18 on Rhino Records.

Black, formerly known as Black Francis in his Pixies days, created the almost experimental "Pistolero" one year after his debut with the Catholics titled "Frank Black and the Catholics."

Black will be nearby the night before, playing the Cotton Club, underneath The Tabernacle in downtown Atlanta. After the 40 Watt Club, the Catholics head to the House of Blues in New Orleans.

Although his success since breaking from the Boston-based Pixies has been spotty, Black's unpredictable and unconventional style of rock has continued to find fans in the music world. Emusic.com's "Top MP-3 Seller List" included Black with the likes of The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Phish in their top 10 list for 1999.

The Catholics are made up of Scott Boutier on drums, Dave McCaffrey on bass and guitar player Rich Gilbert.

Reid Paley, a singer and songwriter, is touring with Black. His latest release is "Revival."
