"Every baby needs a chance. We don't know which baby will become the next president of the United States," said Ivy
Le, a sophomore from Dallas and president of the University organization.
March of Dimes held a date auction last year, which was a huge success, Le said.
The organization hopes for an even bigger turn out this year and will be auctioning off some big names on campus.
Students up for auction include officers of Student Government Association, as well as members of various campus fraternities and sororities.
The auction is only one of several events coming up for the March of Dimes.
In November, the organization will be giving a NICU tour (neonatal intensive care unit) at a local hospital to show the critical conditions of premature babies.
It was the "most heartbreaking and inspirational thing I've ever done," said Rebekah McCorvey, a junior from Savannah and the WalkAmerica Chair for the University's March of Dimes chapter.
Going on an NICU tour for the first time showed "first-hand what these babies were going through," said McCorvey. She said the tour allowed her to see directly who she was helping.
The biggest national event of the year for the March of Dimes is WalkAmerica, held every spring with the big kickoff starting January.
Last year, approximately 2,500 people participated in the WalkAmerica for Athens-Clarke County.
This event is organized by Christi Johnson, the community director of the March of Dimes medical research.
Johnson said she had a personal relationship with the March of Dimes.
The organization has been up-and-running for the past three years and is looking for individuals to join.
Students who are interested in any of these events may contact the University March of Dimes at 613-0758.
