The Georgia softball team will start its SEC road play with a bang this weekend, heading to Starkville, Miss., to face the conference's "other" Bulldogs.

Mississippi State is one of the more surprising teams in the country this season, holding an impressive 16-7 record, a feat that can be attributed to first-year coach Jay Miller.

Miller, a long-time coach at the University of Missouri, took the Tigers to seven NCAA tournaments and two World Series during his tenure in Columbia.

Last season, the two teams met four times, with each side winning two.

This year's contests look to be equally close. In fact, while Georgia leads the SEC with a .311 batting average, Mississippi State is the only other team above .300.

The teams have two common opponents, Florida State and Texas A&M. Against those two, Georgia has a 2-1 record, while Mississippi State is a perfect 2-0.

Following the three-game set with the Bulldogs, Georgia will head north for a mid-week series, its first of the season, with SEC Eastern Divisional Rival Kentucky.

The Wildcats have so far this season suffered through a disappointing campaign, entering the weekend with a 6-13 record after dropping three games last weekend to Florida.

Earlier in the season, Georgia and Kentucky met at the Fun & Sun Classic in Miami. The Dogs took two from the Wildcats, 5-0 and 5-2, en route to winning the tournament.

Georgia's pitching staff hopes to continue its recent domination as conference play continues. The Dogs' pitchers have thrown 16 shutouts in 27 games this year, including five no-hitters.

Offensively, in addition to the conference's best team average, Georgia also claims the top individual average, with Nicole Barber's .444 holding down the top spot.

Georgia begins play on Saturday with the first game at noon, immediately followed by another. All games can be followed via live scoring at (www. georgiadogs.com).
