Seven vehicles were vandalized Monday night while parked in a fraternity parking lot, causing more than $4,000 worth of damage, according to an Athens-Clarke County Police report.

The damaged cars were parked in the Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) fraternity lot located on Pulaski Street.

Most of the car windows reportedly had been broken with a rock, and some windshields were damaged with writing scratched using either a rock or key. The damage totalled an estimated $4,400, according to the report.

Nothing was reported stolen.

William Preston, a sophomore from Augusta and member of SAE, said he woke up Tuesday morning and saw three police officers in the fraternity's parking lot.

"I didn't understand what was going on," he said.

The vandals caused $600 in damage to Preston's Toyota 4-Runner, according to the report.

"I don't understand who would do such a thing," he said. "I would think people would respect our property."

Robert Gardner, a senior from Snellville and an SAE member, said the words "you suck" had been scratched on the back windshield of his Ford Explorer.

"I started to cry because I just got my car fixed," he said. "I don't know why (the vandals) did it."

Eugene Bledsoe's Jeep Cherokee also had something that looked like "no" scratched on his windshield, according to the report.

"Initially, I just wanted to crack (the vandals') skulls," said Bledsoe, an SAE member and a junior from Peachtree City. "And I still want to crack their skulls."

Christopher Williams, a senior from Peachtree City and an SAE member, said all four windows of his Chevrolet Tahoe were scratched.

"My back corner panel was busted with what seemed to be a brick," he said. "I think it's pretty ridiculous, and I am pretty mad."

Preston said he did not have any clues about who did the damage, but his fellow fraternity brother Gardner said he thought it might be the work of another fraternity.

"I don't know why they would have done it," Gardner said.

Hilda Sorrow, spokeswoman for the ACC Police, said investigations are being conducted to determine who caused the vandalism. She said there currently are no suspects.

"I have faith in the ACC Police," Gardner said.

An idea to help catch vandals and others intent on doing harm or damage would be for the University to install cameras in major parking areas, in "blind" spots on walkways(this may interfere with couples' wishing for privacy though), and anywhere trouble may be expected. (Continued…)
