After recording in Atlanta for more than six weeks, local band Modern Skirts will release its first full-length album this weekend, “Catalogue of Generous Men.”

Modern Skirts includes lead-singer Jay Gulley, Jojo Glidewell on piano, Phillip Brantley on bass and guitar, and John Swint, a University senior, on drums.

The band recently played on the “99X Locals Only” Stage for both Music Midtown and the Atlantis Music Conference Showcase in Atlanta.

Gulley said the band members met while in school at the University and have been together for about a year and half.

“Our heads and our hearts have been in the music since we started,” he said.

The group works together to write the music.

“It’s a pretty collaborative effort. We all throw in our own influences,” Gulley said.

The band has grown to have more of an eclectic sound than when it first came together.

Modern Skirts is highly influenced by 60s and 70s British Rock and bands such as Spoon, Wilco and Radiohead.

“Phillip and I are also influenced by alternative country,” Swint said.

The members of Modern Skirts fully value their work with the band. “If you’re not having fun, there’s no real point in playing. I love it,” Swint said.

When recording the album, “there wasn’t any drama,” Brantley said.

Although the band members have a good time, they definitely take their work seriously.

“It started as playing for friends, but then we started thinking about this being something we really wanted to do,” Brantley said.

The band will hold a free CD Listening Party tonight at Walker’s Coffee and Pub on College Avenue at 10 p.m. The entire album will be available to be heard by the public for the first time at this event.

Modern Skirts will have its CD Release Party Saturday at 10 p.m. at The 40 Watt where the band will perform songs from the new album. Special guests opening for the group include Trances Arc and The Films.

Advanced tickets to the show are available at Schoolkids Records, Low Yo Yo Stuff, Junkman’s Daughter’s Brother and online at (www.athensmusic.net) or (www.40watt.com).

The new CD will be available at the show on Saturday and in stores on Aug. 23.
