Members of alt-country band The Chasers set out to make country music different than what is playing on country music stations today.

"The radio today is more '70s album-oriented rock," bassist David Gilliard said. "(Our music) is not the poppy overproduced music you hear."

He said the band members play music that sounds more like tunes from '60s icons George Jones and Waylon Jennings.

The band even opened for Shooter Jennings - Waylon Jennings' son - at the 40 Watt Club the last time he was in town.

Now the group is back at the 40 Watt Club playing its Christmas Party.

The band is used to playing special shows - it plays at special events at Mell's Lounge on the Atlanta Highway - the first venue the band played.

"There's not much going on there," Gilliard said. "We are the only band that ever plays there."

The bar is more known for being a social venue.

The group played one of its CD Release Parties there a couple of months ago. It played the other one at the Caledonia Lounge.

"But that's a totally different crowd," Gilliard said.

Even though the band considers its music country with religion mixed in it, it tries to cater to those with other musical tastes as well.

"We draw some people who want to see (alt-country), but we also get some of the downtown rock crowd," he said. "It's sort of a cleansing for them.

They grew up listening to country in the backseats of their parents' car, but might not listen to it now."
