Working here is the best job ever

Issue date: 12/8/05 Section: Out & About

Working here was the best decision I ever made.

As soon as I saw my byline in The Red & Black in March 2004, I became part of a team of intelligent and hard-working students who put in hours each week for the love of the job, not for the money.

Then not only did I get to be editor of the most awesome section in the paper (take that, sports!), but over the year and a half that I worked here I interviewed celebrities, wrote about things I thought were important, designed countless pages, took pictures on Sanford Field during a game and on the Stegeman Coliseum floor during a Gym Dogs meet, plus much more.

Early on I realized that this kind of job is exactly what I want to do for the rest of my professional career and learned new skills from every person I met.

I worked with professionals from the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, the St. Petersburg Times, Knight Ridder, People Magazine and many others who advised us regularly.

This semester I was really excited to get my first hate mail and to receive even more letters praising my efforts.

And when I got tired and stressed as I put the final touches on Out & About each week, the thousands of people who were depending on me kept me going.

Now with all of those experiences, some that I'll remember as the best of my college career, I'll be able to land the job of my dreams.

As of this January I'm off to New York City to work in magazines and live the fabulous life I've been working toward all these years.

It's been a pleasure finding and telling you about the most fun things to do in Athens each week.

And if you've enjoyed reading the paper, you could consider writing, designing or editing for here next semester.

To find out more, send an e-mail to Jennifer Burk, spring recruitment editor, at jburk@randb.com.

My first assignment at the paper was to interview Maroon 5.

What will yours be?

- Katie Tanner is Out & About editor at The Red & Black.

She is graduating this month with a degree in journalism.
