The Red Cross hopes to attain an essential part of of the state's blood supply today at the first on-campus drive of the year, said donor recruiter Janet Jarrett.

"The Red Cross has to collect 1,200 units of blood every day just to meet the needs of our patients in Georgia," she said. "So approximately one-tenth of what we're trying to collect for the entire state, we're trying to collect Monday."

The drive, sponsored by Students for the American Red Cross, will take place in the Georgia Hall of the Tate Student Center from 11 a.m to 5 p.m.

"Right now we have a critical need for types O and B blood," Jarrett said.

The goal for the drive is 150 pints, which Jarrett said could be reached with donations from about 180 people.

Each donation will help three patients, she said, because it is split into red cells, plasma and platelets.

There are several habits Jarrett encourages before donating.

"In order to have a positive donating experience, I encourage all blood donors to eat a full meal and have a caffeine-free drink before donating," she said.

Donors must be at least 17 years old and weigh 110 pounds.

Each donor will receive a coupon for a Chick-fil-A milkshake and scratch-off tickets to win iPods and free music downloads.

Spring Recruitment more informal event

The Panhellenic and Interfraternity Council will begin Spring Recruitment in the coming weeks.

This informal approach to recruitment involves attending events and parties sponsored by members instead of house tours.

For future sorority hopefuls, there is an information session at the Tate Theater

at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 23

and recruitment will be Jan. 24-31.

The sororities participating in Spring Recruitment are Alpha Gamma Delta and Delta Gamma.

While informal fraternity recruitment has already started, there is a spring rush information session and registration for formal recruitment on Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. at the Georgia Hall in the Tate Student Center.

Spring recruitment for fraternities will be from Jan. 30 to Feb. 3.

For a full list of participating fraternities, visit www.ugagreeklife.com/ifc.

There is no registration fee for fraternity or sorority recruitment.

Call the Greek Life Office at 706-542-4612 or visit the Greek Life Office in Memorial Hall to register for Spring Recruitment 2006.
