Choreographed dance moves, trendy clothing and the presentation of hair on the runway - not the average fashion show.
The University's chapter of the National Council of Negro Women Inc, held its second annual Hair Show Friday at the Tate Student Center. About 40 people attended the event.
"The show acknowledges the work of Athens hair stylists and beauticians and promotes their business," said Geneva Greene, co-chair for the NCNW Hair Show and a junior from Atlanta.
Models presented an array of hair styles created by Athens businesses, such as Sheats Barber and Beauty, Divine Touch Hair Studio, BJ Hardy Hair Salon, Headline, Creations Hair Salon and Upper Cutz.
"We understand that there are (black) students at the University who travel great distances to get their hair done," said Sharyse Burke, NCNW president and a senior from Stone Mountain. "We want to show them that there are capable stylists in Athens and Clarke County."
In addition to modeling long, medium and short hairstyles, as well as braids and up do's, the models wore chic clothing donated by Funk Sway in Atlanta.
A tribute to historic black women also was shown, as well as a hip-hop violin performance by Miss Black UGA 2005, Allison Fuller, a junior from Jonesboro.
The NCNW is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1935 by Mary McLeod Bethune. Its mission is to advance the opportunities and the quality of life for black women, their families and communities, according to its Web site www.uga.edu/NCNW.
The hair show is the group's biggest event of the year, Greene said.
The NCNW also has a mentoring program for girls at Clarke Central High School, and members participate in the annual AIDS walk, she said.
