There are many different ways to have a good time on a Friday night.

Many students find entertainment downtown.

But Sal Amadeo, the coordinator for informal recreation at the department of recreational sports, saw an opportunity that would give students an alternative to their weekend excursions.

"In undergraduate and graduate school I was an active member of the Latino American Student Association and the Graduate Latino Society, so when the idea came up to host a Salsa night, I jumped right on it," he said.

Salsa Night is a project of many groups at the University: the President's office, the Department of Recreational Sports, the Ballroom Dance Club, the Ballroom Performance Group, Lambda Theta Alpha Sorority and the Hispanic Student Association.

Students who attend can enjoy a night full of dance, culture and free fun.

There will also be a performance given by the Ballroom Performance Group, free food and drinks and a live serenata band from Atlanta to accompany all of the dancing.

Amadeo said he's inexperienced in the world of salsa but will be one of the first to show up for the dance lessons by the Ballroom Dance Club. No one needs a partner, but he said he's bringing his girlfriend.

"Every woman likes a guy who has rhythm and can dance to a variety of music - this is a great opportunity for guys to come out and learn a few dance moves," he said.

Heather Limper, a sophomore from Augusta and a member of the Ballroom Dance Club, said she started dancing as a freshman with the group, which leads most of the dancing on the floor. The members will alternate with partners as a way of spreading the talent throughout the room.

"I'd never danced with a partner before," Limper said about her experience before the club.

Now, she said she would encourage everyone to at least take the time while they are young to learn the basics of ballroom dance.

She hopes the event will entice people to join the dance community, as well as support the Latin community, since Salsa is an upbeat, energy-filled dance strongly influenced by Latin culture.

"People who wouldn't normally come to something like this might just find that they love it," she said.

Limper also said the event will have many other exciting attractions including free T-shirts and dance lessons, the Ballroom Performance Group show, the live band and club sign-ups.
