Club Description:
Kashima-Shinryu practices at UGA focus on the primary arts of kenjutsu (swordsmanship) and jujutsu (unarmed self-defense), but students are also introduced to several related arts, such as Battojutsu (sword drawing), Kaikenjutsu (use of daggers and knives), Sojutsu (spearmanship), Bojutsu (use of long staves), Shuriken-jutsu (the art of throwing darts), Naginata-jutsu (use of the Japanese haliberd or glaive). Beginning students will learn the fundamental techniques and ideas behind Kashima-Shinryu using bokuto (wooden swords) and fukuro shinai (bamboo swords) as well as bare handed for jujutsu. Kashima-Shinryu preserves the fighting techniques and martial insights of the warriors of medieval Japan. The art is comprised of a mixture of mental and physical techniques designed to aid a student in any weapon or unarmed situation
The UGA Kashima-Shinryu club meets every Monday and Wednesday from 6:00pm to 8:00pm in the Ramsey Center on UGA's campus. Anyone who is interested in the martial art is welcome to join us during our normal practice or contact us. Beginners are welcome at any point in the semester, and membership is open to any UGA student, faculty or staff member.
We usually ask students to observe for their first day, so normal street clothes are fine for the first day of practice. When you are actually participating in practice, you are still welcome to wear street clothes, or any other comfortable exercise clothing. Please keep in mind, however, that some of our techniques involve rolling on the mats and/or grabbing or pulling on a partner's clothing, so we recommend you purchase a judogi (Japanese Judo uniform) or wear clothing that protects your knees and elbows, and that you don't mind getting stretched out.
