In a town with such a diverse and unpredictable music scene, it can be refreshing to hear a familiar sound every once in a while.
An Athens favorite, the Kinchafoonee Cowboys - composed of members Glen Tennyson (acoustic guitar and lead vocals), Chris Scarborough (lead guitar), Chad McGrath (bass guitar and background vocals), Keith Cromartie (drums), Jason Fuller (piano, organ and background vocals) and Shane Cannon (harmonica) - will play at the Georgia Theatre on Friday.
Although these Albany natives have toured elsewhere throughout the south, they have remained faithful to Athens over the years.
Since their debut in 1991, the Kinchafoonee Cowboys have been frequenting the downtown Athens music scene multiple times a year. Needless to say, the band has gathered quite an impressive fanbase in the area.
With a distinct sound best described as country with a southern rock edge, the Cowboys have shared the stage with such popular artists such as Dave Matthews Band, Diamond Rio, Alabama, Martina McBride and many others.
Wil Greene, owner of the Georgia Theatre and fan of the group, notes that its shows not only almost always sell out but also are a guaranteed good time.
"It's a party," Greene said. "If you like country at all, you'll know every word they play."
Greene also said that being a country fan is not a prerequisite to enjoy the show, but it's a country show, meaning it's comfortable, fun, unrehearsed and genuine.
"The lead singer (Tennyson) just has this big grin, you feel like your uncle is up on stage," Greene said.
Since the group's last visit to Athens in October, it has kept busy enjoying the success of the latest release in 2005, "Cowboy Ways: Live at the Georgia Theater."
In addition, the group performed at the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party - also known as the annual Georgia-Florida game - opening for the notorious Hank Williams, Jr.
Despite the pouring rain, it was an overall good experience, said Chris Scarborough, lead guitarist of the group.KINCHAFOONEE

On the topic of any upcoming releases, the group is simply relaxing and enjoying performing for now.
"We're just up for having a good time playing right now, and we hope everyone comes out to see us," Scarborough said.
When asked what makes the band's concerts unique, entertaining and most importantly different from others, Scarborough gets straight to the point.
"What really does it is when we come out in nothing but loincloths," he said.
