It's 58 acres of prime real estate, smack in the middle of Athens.

University officials may not know exactly what the new health sciences campus on the Navy school site would look like, but they do know one thing: they want it - all of it. Click here for a full view of the Navy School map graphic.

The Local Redevelopment Authority - the committee in charge of deciding who gets the land - will make its decision around May, said Holly Reed, base re-use coordinator for the group.

Exact details of the University's proposal for the site have not been hashed out, said Terry Hastings, director of communication for the office of the vice president for research.

NEW BUILDINGS AT THE NAVY SITE

College of Public Health - The University's current program teaches 300 students in several programs, including environmental health, epidemiology and health administration. Moving the College will "allow the entire public health building to be housed in a single facility," according to the University proposal.
School of Nursing - The Medical College of Georgia's 85-student satellite facility in Athens would be able to teach more students and "create significant new opportunities for nursing research," according to the proposal.
Allied Health Building - Allied Health programs train non-physical health professionals in areas such as medical technology; dietetics and nutrition; and radiation therapy.
Teaching Laboratory Building - This building would include a first-year gross anatomy lab for teaching students human anatomy through cadaver dissection, a histology lab to teach tissue structure and a digital pathology lab which would use digital technology to capture and store images on a slide.
"We're really in the planning for a plan phase," she said.

But University officials submitted a more detailed proposal to the committee on Jan. 18, including a rough outline of what they have in mind for the site.

It is a ludicrous farce to consider providing the existing Navy School property to the so-called University of Georgia in view of their earlier unethical, improper and possibly illegal behavior in seeking to fool both the university community and the public about the sordid activities of the American Cancer Society as documented in "University Fails to Offer Another Viewpoint" below. Ha ha ha, nice one Buck. I'm afraid the town nutjob still manages to type with his straight-jacket on, unfortunately. "Crazy Winfield," as he's known around Athens, carries an obseesive hatred for the school that fired him and for the town that rightly ostracizes him. (Continued…)

Whoa Bobster. Do you hate Winfield because he's old or black?
