Being a student has its perks when it comes to getting discounts on social events.
University students are being offered half price tickets to an international classical concert at Hugh Hodgson Concert Hall Saturday night.
HUNGARIAN
When: 8 p.m. Saturday
Where: Hodgson Hall in the Performing Arts Center
Tickets: $34/rear balcony, $39/orchestra or front balcony, half price for University students with UGA IDThe Hungarian Symphony Orchestra, presented by the University of Georgia Performing Arts Center, is celebrating its 100th anniversary with its debut American tour, said Bobby Tyler, marketing and media relations director for the office of performing arts.
"Athens is one of only a few U.S. cities that will be presenting this award-winning orchestra," Tyler said.
Conducting will be music director András Ligeti, who has described himself as "the conductor who doesn't smile," Tyler said.
This does not mean Ligeti is impassive. He conducts with a great amount of emotion behind his serious demeanor, Tyler said.
"Presenting a masterpiece is like a person baring his soul before an audience," Ligeti said.
The program will include Mussorgky's Night on Bald Mountain, Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 and Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 2, featuring Finnish pianist Paavali Jumppanen.
Jumppanen's playing has been described as fresh and exciting, performing with immense power and an extraordinary range of colors, according to the New York Times.
A free lecture will be given 45 minutes before the concert in Ramsey Concert Hall by David Chapman, a graduate student in music at the University.
Tickets can be purchased by calling the Performing Arts Center box office at 706-542-4400 or in person or at the box office. Tickets will be available at the door and will be the same price.
Students also have the option to buy a student pass if they regularly attend concerts at the Performing Arts Center.
"A student pass entitles them to pick four concerts here that they want to see - the pass only costs $32, which makes it just $8 per concert," Tyler said.
