'THE MESSENGERS'
Rating: PG-13 (Thriller)
"The Messengers," directed by Oxide and Danny Pang of Hong Kong, suggests that young children are more open and susceptible to paranormal phenomena. "The Messengers" tells the story of a mysterious darkness that inhabits a seemingly peaceful North Dakota sunflower farm. The family living in the house is soon torn apart by paranoia, fear and murder. "The Messengers" stars Kristen Stewart ("Panic Room"), Dylan McDermott, Penelope Ann Miller and John Corbett (best known as "Sex and the City's" Aidan). This film is the Pang brothers' English language debut and is produced by Sam Raimi's (director of the "Spider Man" series) Ghost House Pictures. The only threat to the success of this film is genre burn-out. How many creepy Asian thrillers have been made and remade in the past few years?
'BECAUSE I SAID SO'
Rating: PG-13 (Comedy)
Director Michel Lehmann's ("40 Days and 40 Nights") new film "Because I Said So" chronicles a well-meaning mother and her overzealous daughters as they search for the perfect man for their single daughter/sister. The eager mother is played by Diane Keaton, gracefully accepting age-appropriate roles without losing her screen presence, Lauren Graham (of "Gilmore Girls" fame), Piper Perabo, Mandy Moore, Tom Everett Scott and Gabriel Macht also star. Written by the people who brought us "Stepmom," "Because I Said So" stands a chance at becoming Mandy Moore's first mainstream blockbuster.
'FACTORY GIRL'
Rating: R (Limited Release)
Sienna Miller ("Cassanova") stars as Edie Sedgwick in director George Hickenlooper's new film "Factory Girl." The film follows Sedgwick as she drops out of Harvard and journeys to New York City where she earns the prestige of being the muse of the father of pop art, Andy Warhol, played by Guy Pearce ("Memento"). Talk of this biography has been bandied about since the late 1970s and has recently been resurrected. Katie Holmes had originally been slated for the role but was dropped because she turned up in the tabloids far too often. Sienna Miller, on the other hand, who was initially dropped because she wasn't in the tabloids enough, remedied this by her relationship with Jude Law. Pearce's role was reportedly expanded after test screenings, and a Bob Dylan-inspired character is portrayed by Hayden Christensen.
