Through its characters, the show explores issues such as AIDS and sexual orientation.

The "Rent" national tour is coming to the Classic Center tonight.

"I think everyone should see the show no matter what their views are on homosexuality, AIDS and life generally," said Amanda Robbins, a junior from Marietta. "It has a powerful message that everybody can learn from."

"Rent" is a favorite among some University students because it has a theme that they believe in.

Robbins said its message about cherishing life and living each day like it's your last is a motto she lives by.

"One of the reasons why I love 'Rent' is because of its message of tolerance and respecting people for who they are," said Victoria Reynolds, a graduate student from Metter.

Krystal Brown, who plays Mimi, is very passionate about the character.

"I've always felt a connection with her in some sort of way, even before I auditioned for the part," she said.

Brown said each cast member personifies some attributes of their characters in their off-stage lives.

Although the creator of "Rent" died before the musical debuted as a Broadway show, his memory lives on.

Appreciation has been showed for his art through the awards that the show has received.

These include numerous Tony awards and a Pulitzer prize for drama.
