Beer isn't considered a breakfast beverage or dessert ingredient by many people other than college students.
However, a unique cooking contest Monday night will allow local chefs an opportunity to get creative and show the flexibility of cooking desserts with different flavorful beers.
The Terrapin Wake-n-Bake Off contest at Aromas in Five Points will hold a taste test contest of 15 to 20 desserts cooked with beer.
"It should be fun and interesting to see what people come up with," said Christy Hussain, general manager of Aromas.
The Wake-n-Bake Off's $20 ticket price includes three pint-sized beers and the opportunity to sample up to 20 dessert creations.
"They'll all be bite-sized so people can go around and taste them," Hussain said. "All the desserts have to be made with beer as an ingredient."
The ticket price is reduced to $15 for anyone who
wants to bake and turn in the recipe for the contest along with sampling the goodies.
Bakers must have items baked and delivered to
us the day before, Hussain said.
She said bakers will be allowed to register until the 20 spots allowed fill up.
If someone only wants to cook and not drink beer or sample desserts, then the price is $5.
The Wake-n-Bake Off is one of the sponsored events on Terrapin Beer Co.'s Monster Beer Tour 2007.
Terrapin, a local micro-brewery, is sponsoring the event and will promote its coffee-flavored creation, Wake-n-Bake Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout, at the competition.
One of the three beers included with the ticket price will be Terrrapin's Wake-n-Bake Imperial Stout.
According to Terrapin's Web site, Wake-n-Bake beer is unique because it has a Jittery Joe's coffee taste and aroma with blended premium coffees from Costa Rica, Guatemala and Zimbabwe.
"It's heavy, chocolate-y dessert-style beer," Hussain said.
"I guess which is why people are cooking with it."
The Wake-n-Bake coffee blend beer also contains espresso.
There are no regulations as to how much or what kind of beer must be used in the recipes of the cooking competition.
When: 7 p.m. Monday
Where: Aromas in Five Points

"For example, if you used a lambic beer, then you could make something that is much sweeter and fruitier than traditional beer," Hussain said. "The alcohol is going to be cooked out of it anyway."
All regular Aromas menu items will be for sale, including various tapas, wines and beers.
There will be a trophy for first prize and gift cards to Aromas for the top three winners of the competition. Participants can buy tickets in advance in person at Aromas.
"I hope people are creative and fun," Hussain said.
"I'm going to go home and try something. Maybe use a recipe I'd normally use and add beer and see how it'll turn out," she said.
