Issue date: 2/8/07 Section: Out & About
Combine humorous music videos with gorgeous leading ladies and a highly successful career spanning more than 20 years, you get country superstar Toby Keith.
Toby Keith seems to be able to do anything.
In 1993, he found early success with his first single, "Shoulda Been a Cowboy," which quickly rose to No. 1 on country music charts.
Since then, the Oklahoma native has had more than 10 No. 1 singles, including "How Do You Like Me Now," "I Wanna Talk About Me" and "As Good as I Once Was."
"I enjoy the way that Toby's music is never predictable," said Katie Sokolik, a junior from Loganville. "No two songs of his that I've heard sound just alike. He's very talented."
After many platinum records, Keith was voted the Academy of Country Music's Entertainer of the Year in 2002 and 2003.
Writing, singing and producing his own music throughout his career, Keith most recently starred opposite Kelly Preston in the film "Broken Bridges" and led its soundtrack to success.
Keith's 2006 single "A Little Too Late" just received two nominations for the CMT Awards, including Video of the Year.
Alongside all of the critical acclaim and audience adoration, Keith has found time to tour the country for his "Hookin' Up & Hangin' Out Tour," which is coming to the Columbus Civic Center at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
"Ft. Benning is here in Columbus, and Toby is such a huge supporter of our military, it is only fitting that he play here," said Robin Walker, the marketing manager of the Columbus Civic Center.
The Civic Center accommodates 10,000 people and is used for many different events.
"The arena hosts a variety of concerts, company events, graduations, conventions and private events throughout the year," Walker said. "It has more than 300 event days each year."
For his concerts, Keith gives members of his fan club chances for meet-and-greets and appearances onstage with the singer.
This tour only has a few more stops, but Keith will take part in music festivals throughout the summer, and he isn't slowing down anytime soon.
Keith's newest single, "High Maintenance Woman," is set to hit airwaves Monday. Later this year, he's slated to star in a movie with last year's winner of TV's "Last Comic Standing," Josh Blue.
"His music is just good old country, but even if you wouldn't consider yourself a country music fan, you should still give him a chance," said Sokolik. "He's not just your typical country music singer."
