Results of the MRI on Georgia guard Mike Mercer's right knee confirmed that the injuries were severe enough to keep the sophomore from Snellville out for the rest of the season, according to a release sent out by the team Monday.

The tests showed that Mercer has a torn ACL and a sprained MCL in the knee that he injured during Saturday's win at South Carolina.

"This is a tough break for both Mike and our team," coach Dennis Felton said in the release.

"But both Mike and his teammates will fight to move forward. Mike's spirits are good right now and I'm glad for that because, for the next six months, he will need to keep a positive attitude as he works to regain his strength and athleticism."

According to team athletic trainer Colby Pohlmann, Mercer, the team's second-leading scorer, rebounder and assist man, is expected to recover fully from his injuries.

He is scheduled to undergo surgery in 10-14 days.

Recovery time for knee injuries like Mercer's usually lasts from six months to more than a year.

Mercer was the only Bulldog to start in every game this season.
