Athens-Clarke County Police arrested a male University freshman Saturday afternoon after he unsuccessfully tried to purchase alcohol, police said.
According to the ACC police report:
Hayter Lamar Whitman attempted to purchase an 18-pack of Coors Light and a six-pack of Smirnoff Ice from Jimbo's on Baxter Street with a Virginia license at 3:25 p.m.
The store clerks were skeptical that the ID belonged to Whitman, so they asked him for his date of birth.
When Whitman stuttered and was unable to respond to the question, one store clerk said, "This is a fake ID."
Whitman then ran out of the store, but the store clerk ran after him and told him to come back into the store and wait for police.
When ACC police arrived, they arrested Whitman and charged him with underage possession of alcohol.
Whitman declined to comment.
