Based on the popular Comedy Central series, "Reno 911!: Miami" exerts the same crude police humor that fans of the show have grown to love.
Written by Ben Garant (Deputy Junior), Thomas Lennon (Lieutenant Dangle) and Kerri Kenney (Deputy Trudy Wiegel), the film properly portrays how the silly incompetence of a small-town police department drastically increases in the big city.
Grade: B-
Verdict: Laughable for those who have seen the show; not so much for those who have not.
The film revolves around the department's invitation to the national police convention in Miami, where, upon arrival, the gang discovers they are not on the guest list.
Things take an unexpected turn as the hotel accommodating the thousands of police deputies undergoes a terrorist attack that prevents anybody from safely vacating the building. Immediately, Reno's leisurely stay turns into a crime-fighting adventure as the cops are left in charge of enforcing Miami's laws, and of trying to get the imprisoned officers out to safety.
With special celebrity cameos by Danny DeVito, The Rock, Nick Swardson and Michael Ian Black, viewers get to meet a variety of hilarious characters, most of whom never before have appeared on the show.
The film's storyline is predictable, only because the writers wanted to make a parody of a typical action movie.
Unfortunately, its lethargic start significantly slows it down, and as hilarious as some parts are, it's a shame the previews give away so many punch lines.
Nevertheless, avid viewers of the series are sure to get a laugh out of the new Reno adventure. It's unclear, however, whether first timers truly will be able to appreciate the humor behind the movie without previously being exposed to the show's vulgarity.
