Friday: Auburn 4, Georgia 3
Sunday: No. 1 Georgia 6, Alabama 1The Lady Bulldogs had to climb out of an early hole as they lost the doubles point 2-1 to the Tide. It was the second consecutive match Georgia has failed to win the doubles' point.
"I thought Alabama played great doubles against us today," Georgia coach Jeff Wallace said. "All three courts could have gone either way. When it's that close, anything can happen."
After the intermission, the Lady Bulldogs came out of the locker room filled with intensity, jumping to early leads in all six matches.
Freshman Yvette Hyndman stayed unbeaten for the dual match season by cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Alabama's Shelley Godwin in about an hour. For Hyndman, this was her 25th win of the season dating back to individual play in the fall.
"I was really impressed with how our team regrouped and got fired up," Wallace said. "We came out with a lot of energy in the singles."
Sophomore Monika Dancevic bounced back from her match at Auburn, when she had to retire in the third set due to injury to roll past Nicole Briceno 6-1, 6-2.
Freshman Naoko Ueshima breezed past Bianca Svensson 6-0, 6-1, minutes before Kelley Hyndman clinched the victory.
Seniors Natalie Frazier and Darya Ivanov closed the match out for the Lady Bulldogs with wins, as well.
No singles player from Alabama won more than two games in a set, and all of Georgia's singles wins were straight set victories.
The Lady Bulldogs suffered their first loss of the season Friday to No. 41 Auburn, losing 4-3 after holding a 3-1 advantage. With the loss, the Lady Bulldogs' No. 1 position could be in jeopardy when the new rankings are released on Tuesday.
"The loss was disappointing but it's going to make us stronger as a team," Yvette Hyndman said. "Now we know that any team can beat us on any given day."
Wallace described the loss over Auburn as a wake-up call for the Lady Bulldogs - a call that his team answered against the Crimson Tide.
"Our team showed everybody that they're hungry and still want to have a great year," Wallace said. "It was disappointing, but at the same time, sometimes you need that to remotivate and rededicate yourself."
The Lady Bulldogs will return to the tennis courts Friday to take on No. 22 Kentucky at home.
