Speed and experience made a difference Saturday as the defense overpowered the offense in Georgia's second scrimmage of the spring.

"I think the defense got the best of them (the offense) today," said head coach Mark Richt.

With the young offensive line still getting acquainted, it was a rough scrimmage for quarterback Matthew Stafford and the running backs.

"Way, way too many sacks for the offense. For the defense, it was good. How good is that offensive line playing right now? I don't know," Richt said.

However, the offense did have several flashes of greatness including a touchdown pass from Stafford to Mikey Henderson, as well as a touchdown from quarterback Joe Cox to receiver Kenneth Harris.

Running backs Kregg Lumpkin and Knowshon Moreno were not given many opportunities due to the defensive line's dominance over the offensive line, but according to Richt, they hit the holes when they opened up.

Despite the offensive struggles, Stafford is confident in the abilities of his offensive line.

"I think we did better later in the day. I think we figured out what we're good at and what we're not so good at," Stafford said.

The scrimmage allowed the players to see and work on the speed of the game, an element that almost everyone noticed by the end of the day.

"I thought the overall speed, effort and running after the ball defensively was the best it has been since spring started," Richt said.

"I think we are a quicker team than last year."

The speed of the defense was not lost on Stafford, who was scrambling much of the day.

"They're quick, and everybody can run. It's going to be good to have them on our side in the fall," Stafford said.

However, the defense is not the only side with blazing quickness. Stafford referred to his receiving corp as a "pretty scary bunch when it comes to speed."

In addition to the scrimmage, Georgia also hosted Junior Day - a day designed for high school prospects to visit the campus, see the facilities and meet the coaches.

Due to NCAA restrictions, the coaches are not allowed to speak of any of the players by name, but according to Rivals.com, the Bulldogs did pick up a verbal commitment from Brandon Boykin, an athlete from Fayetteville.

There were no serious injuries on Saturday, and according to Richt, offensive linemen Vince Vance and Josh Davis are getting better by the day, with Davis possibly returning to practice on Monday. Middle linebacker Brandon Miller bruised his back but is not expected to miss any practice.

The team has two more weeks of practice until the G-Day game, which concludes the spring season April 7.
