Though the buzz of Campus MovieFest is fading away, ambitious student filmmakers won't have to wait a whole year to showcase their talents again.
Nuçi's Space, the non-profit help center known for its involvement in the local music scene, will hold its first MovieFest in conjunction with the second annual Depression and Suicide Awareness Week, April 16-20, and is now accepting movie submissions.
"We embrace all types of artists in our community, and we want to give this opportunity for the filmmakers in Athens to showcase their talents for a really good cause," said Nuçi's intern Alyssa Bernstein.
The brain-child of intern Emily Siegesmund, the festival reflects the greater cause at Nuçi's Space, founded in honor of suicide victim and local musician Nuçi Phillips.
"[Siegesmund] wanted to create a project that really got the campus involved," said Bernstein.
The entry requirements reflect the motivational theme, which manifests itself in a line required in each script: "From the struggles of one comes strength for many."
Outside of this requirement, the three- to five-minute short films are open to interpretation and artistic expression - a central pillar of the festival's mission.
"We are hoping this will give enough room for creativity while still providing a common theme," said Siegesmund.
The submission period for the festival lasts until April 9, and the finalists will be screened at the Student Learning Center on April 18.
