Thursday is the last day Athens Driving Range hosts the qualifying rounds of the Million Dollar Hole-in-One Contest.

Proceeds from the contest will benefit the Athens Area Humane Society.

Participants have unlimited opportunities to hit a golf ball into a kid's swimming pool located 125 yards away. A $1 donation is required for each attempt.

The qualifying rounds will be staffed by volunteers.

Clubs will be available to those who need them. No appointment is required to participate.

Tom Valente, owner of the range, commented on the weather's effects on participation in the contest.

"April is usually our busiest month," Valente said.

"Last year, almost every day was in the 80 degrees and sunny; this year, we've only had one day like that."

Finals will be held in May at the Jennings Mill Country Club. In the finals, qualifiers have one shot at each of the three prizes.

The first shot will be worth a dream vacation sponsored by Bulldog Car Wash.

The second shot will be worth a new car from Phil Hughes Honda.

The final shot will be worth $1 million and is sponsored by Pet Supplies "Plus."

"We're grateful to our sponsors for making this amazing contest possible," Executive Director at the Athens Area Humane Society Crystal Schultz, said. "The prizes are wonderful, and it's exciting that with each successful hole in one, the AAHS will receive a sizable contribution."

The Humane Society is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting animal welfare. It operates the only open-admission shelter in Athens.

The society provides shelter for abandoned and mistreated cats and other small animals while it works on placing them in suitable homes.

Some of the proceeds from this year's fundraiser will be applied toward opening an additional adoption center in Athens.

The society rescues about 1,200 animals a year through housing and relocation.

The Humane Society combats overpopulation by offering clinic days, where affordable spaying and neutering are provided. Rabies vaccinations also are available at their clinic.
