High school band members aren't your typical heroes.
But this year University alumna Courtney Brandt published a book, "The Line," set within the formations of a marching band.
"I wanted to give a voice to to the high school marching band crowd," Brandt said.
The book is the first in a series of books dealing with the same marching band theme.
"It's not the great American novel," Brandt said. "It's a cute young adult novel."
Although she currently resides in Los Angeles, Brandt is looking for University students to help her market and advertise her book.
"I know what you guys are capable of," she said.
Brandt is using various media for advertising the book, including Facebook, MySpace and her own Web site, www.linebook.com.
The book itself was published using an online supported self-publisher called iuniverse.com. The Web site facilitates publishing and even marketing a book through a five-step process.
Brandt is now on the fifth step. Her work now consists of advertising and marketing her book to increase awareness.
This is where the University interns would come in.
Students would help Brandt monitor the online feedback that Brandt already is using and help put together other ways of advertising.
Now that she is in what she called "the real world," Brandt had some advice for University students about working outside of college. "The word 'no' cannot be in your vocabulary," she said.
She also said learning another language would be a big advantage.
Brandt plans on coming to Athens on May 3 to the Barnes and Noble on Atlanta Highway for a book signing.
