For those who won't be jet-setting overseas this summer, the University is providing a taste of Spanish culture - no passport required.
The Department of Romance Languages in cooperation with UGA Housing is introducing a Spanish language "living-learning community" this summer.
Participating students will live in Soule Hall from June to August and participate in activities, including group events, cultural outreach opportunities and coursework. The program will end with a celebratory banquet, and students will receive credit for SPAN 2001 and 2002.
"The idea literally walked into my office in the form of the (Romance languages) department head," said Dr. Hilda Mata, coordinator of the program. "It gives students the chance to live the language every moment possible."
According to Mata, the program's staff will live in the dorms with the students and a native speaker always will be available. Students will be required to speak Spanish at all times, except in the confines of their private rooms.
"The new Spanish immersion program is a tremendous opportunity to realize the level of language skill growth associated with international travel … all without leaving the UGA campus," said Ed Kelly, Publications Coordinator of University Housing.
Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, the Office of the Vice President for Instruction and University Food Services are collaborating with the Romance language and housing departments.
The rates for the program include a meal plan, single or double occupant room and program fee.
Students have two options for accommodations. For a double room, meal plan and program fee, the total rate is $2,084.26. For a single room, the rate is $2,187.26.
Breakfast and lunch will be provided at East Village Commons, and dinner will be available at Bolton Dining Commons. A five-day meal plan will be available June 5-July 6th and a seven-day meal plan will be available from July 7-August 3rd.
"We think it is going to be a fun and fruitful opportunity for those students who want the experience of immersion in another language but who are not able to participate in study abroad for whatever reason," said Kelly.
The Spanish Immersion program is one of several language programs available through University Housing.
Others include year-long "language communities" offered in Spanish and French. The Summer Spanish Immersion Program will accept 20 students. Eight students have signed up, but interested students can apply through early June.
According to Mata, the program requires a particular kind of student because of the inevitable challenges.
"We need students who are dedicated to learning the language and that can deal with the frustrations," Mata said.
