Athens was anything but a sleepy Southern town Saturday night.

With 150 cyclists racing through downtown Athens, a crowd of 30,000 spectators wandering the streets, plus sidewalk bars serving drinks to the masses, there was bound to be trouble.

It came in the form of one of the worst bike wrecks in the history of Twilight. About 70 bikers were thrown off their cycles at one of the trickiest turns in the race (Turn 3, the corner of Washington and Thomas streets). The race had to be restarted, and at the end, first place went to the Abercrombie & Fitch team, second, Kodak Easy Share and third, Jittery Joe's.

The criterium was founded in 1980 by Gene Dixon and is called the "Criterium Not To Miss" by VeloNews. Twilight is the kick-off event to the USA Crits Southeast Series and The USA Crits National Series.
