Last week Adams was elected chair of the NCAA Executive Committee with his two-year term beginning immediately.
"I think it's a great honor for Dr. Adams and for the University," said University Director of Athletics Damon Evans.
"It shows the respect he has among his colleagues. Moreover, it demonstrates the confidence his peers have in his knowledge of intercollegiate athletics."
Adams' involvement with NCAA has been extensive, including serving as chairs for three committees, the Division I Budget Committee, Executive Committee Finance Committee and Executive Committee Working Group on Membership Growth. Adams also serves on the Division I Board of Directors.
"I am honored by this election and appreciate the confidence that my colleagues have shown in me," Adams said in a news release.
"I see this as one more opportunity for the University of Georgia to take a leadership role by working for the advancement and betterment of intercollegiate athletics across the nation."
Adams succeeds University of Hartford President Walter Harrison as the chair of the Executive Committee, which is comprised of 13 campus presidents and chancellors who oversee Association-wide issues.
"As a member of the Executive Committee for a number of years, Mike has provided great leadership to Division I and the entire Association," NCAA President Myles Brand said.
"His understanding of the relationship between intercollegiate athletics and higher education is especially valuable now as he steps into the role of chair of the Executive Committee."
