Lovers of fashion and philanthropy can peacefully coincide, thanks to TOMS shoes.
"I created TOMS with a singular mission: to make life more comfortable," said designer, Blake Mycoskie, according to www.tomsshoes.com.
The comfort he created is two-fold: first, Mycoskie created a soft, stylish slip-on shoe, inspired by his travel to Argentina and designed
in the likes of the traditional alpargata shoe.
Second, TOMS promises for every pair of shoes purchased that a second will be donated to an Argentinian child in need. Donations are made
through shoe drops and videos of the drops available on www.youtube.com.
"The videos are heart-warming. Seeing those kids makes buying a cute, comfortable pair of shoes more than worth it," said Lauren Mullins, a
University senior from Perry. "I have a pair of the pink and blue canvas ones. You have to wear them a few hours for the canvas to stretch a little to fit your foot, but then they're really
comfortable."
The initial draw for most customers is the cause, but the quality product makes the donation worthwhile as well.
"I think it's a really great cause and something simple people can do to help those who are less fortunate," said Katie Greene, a junior from Lawrenceville. "The shoes look really comfortable and come in a variety of colors. For not much money, you can give something as simple as a pair of shoes while getting a pair for yourself also."
All adult-size shoes cost $38 with the exception of a hand-painted limited edition. This edition is painted in a graffiti style by artist Tyler Ramsey and costs $68.
TOMS have been featured in a variety of publications including Oprah magazine, Vogue magazine and even Spanish magazines.
They have also been spotted on some famous feet. According to fashion web site, www.shefinds.com, celebrities like Kiera Knightley, Kirsten
Dunst, Cameron Diaz, Sienna Miller and Renee Zellweger have been spotted wearing the shoes.
"It's simple … you buy a pair of TOMS, and I give a pair to a child on your behalf," said Mycoskie.
While the shoes are sold in stores in various states and countries, the nearest retailers to the University that carry them are in Florida and South Carolina.
TOMS are also available for men, women and children in a variety of colors and patterns at www.tomsshoes.com.
