Dahlgren poised for another hammer title

Four members of Georgia's track and field team advanced to later rounds after opening day action at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif., on Wednesday.
Senior Jennifer Dahlgren, sophomore Nate Rolfe, junior Levern Spencer and senior David Dickens all moved on in their events. Dahlgren and Rolfe moved on in the hammer, Spencer in the high jump and Dickens in the 400-meter dash.
"This was kind of a normal qualifying day for us where the high-ranked folks got through and some of those who were hoping for breakout performances did not make it," said head coach Wayne Norton.
Dahlgren, who is the school, collegiate and South American record holder in the hammer, qualified for the hammer finals
on her first throw, an effort of 220 feet, 8 inches. It was the longest of the day. She competes finals on Friday.
Spencer, who was one of 11 jumpers to clear 5-10.75 in the qualifying round. Her finals are also Friday.
Rolfe's hammer throw of 208 was enough to give him the 10th-longest throw of the day. His final is also Friday.
Dickens was the third in the 400 in the third of five heats (46.89) and was the 13th out of 16. His finals are also Friday.
Today, senior Sarah Gretzmacher competes in the heptathlon starting.
