Three Lumpkin Street fraternities - Pi Kappa Alpha, Tau Epsilon Phi and Phi Delta Theta - accepted the University's offer to move to River Road after negotiations.

The fraternities were presented with the University's proposal to relocate back in late March of this year, and were given until July 1 to respond. After negotiations about rent prices, the three fraternities agreed to move.

Rodney Bennett, vice president for Student Affairs, was unable to be reached as of Wednesday afternoon. His assistant, Thomas Burke, declined to comment but said: "(Bennett) is really the one who knew the details of that (the negations)."

LUMPKIN STREET FRATERNITIES

Tau Epsilon Phi accepted the University's offer to move to River Road.
Phi Delta Theta accepted the University's offer to move to River Road.
Pi Kappa Alpha accepted the University's offer to move to River Road.
Kappa Alpha turned down the University's offer to move to River Road and is building a house on West Hancock Avenue.
Sigma Chi has a 40-year lease with the University and will remain on Lumpkin Street.
Chi Phi says it has an agreement with the University, but the University contends the agreement is non-binding and the fraternity will not remain on Lumpkin Street.

The University plans to expand the northwest side of campus with the land it has acquired from these Lumpkin fraternities.

However, it remains unclear as to how the University will handle the land occupied by the two remaining fraternities on South Lumpkin Street.

The two organizations - Chi Phi and Sigma Chi - are located near the relocating fraternities.

The University approached Kappa Alpha, another Lumpkin Street fraternity, with proposals to relocate to River Road. The fraternity turned down earlier offers and decided to build a house on West Hancock Avenue.

Chi Phi maintains its right to stay on Lumpkin Street. But the University made Chi Phi a relocation offer, and the fraternity has until Sept. 1 to respond.

The only Lumpkin Street fraternity that has not been asked to move is Sigma Chi.

Sigma Chi can stay on Lumpkin thanks to a 40-year lease it signed with the University in 1996.

The three fraternities will join Sigma Nu and Alpha Tau Omega, both of which have decided to move to River Road. With these three fraternities' relocation, the University hopes to create a fraternity row on River Road.

I am willing to bet that DUI arrests on River Road and East Campus road will increase after the move.
