Lights, camera, action! We all love going to see movies, and Athens has many locations to choose from.

For the Hollywood blockbusters and flops, there are two traditional movie theaters.

There is a theater either side of Athens. Carmike 12 is close to downtown and campus, on Lexington Road. On the west side of town, there is Beechwood Stadium 11, located on Alps Road. Both are ideal for watching new releases.

For those on a budget, Georgia Square 5 Cinemas, located off of Atlanta Highway, shows older movies at a fraction of the cost. Viewers can still get the movie theater experience, without having to break the bank.

For a different movie-going experience, a drive-in theater is about 45 minutes outside of Athens. Highway 17 Theatres in Dewy Rose has three outdoor screens that show new releases. Drive-ins can be both a romantic date location and fun for a group of people.

The Athens-Clarke County Library hosts free screenings of a variety of films, ranging from classics to documentaries.

The University's Main Library has a screening room on the seventh floor. Here, there is a large selection of movies and documentaries that can be checked out and watched on location in exchange for a student ID.

The screening room is also available to the general public but there are limited TVs available.

On campus there is also a movie theater at the Tate Student Center. Here, they screen not only new releases, but also classics and independent movies for just a couple of bucks. At times, they also host special sneak previews of upcoming new releases for free. These sneak previews require students to pick up an advance ticket and it is usually first come, first serve for both tickets and seats.

Around downtown, there are also a few alternative places to screen movies.

Both Flicker Theatre & Bar and Georgia Theatre have movie nights throughout the year. Call the theaters for showtimes and movie information.

Athens' new arthouse theater, Cine Bar/Cafe/Cinema, is another choice that shows many international films, along with some smaller releases in English.
