Sharing a 15' x 12' box with another human wasn't exactly how you pictured starting your college career.
Well, why not make the most of it and throw a party?
Hosting a party in your dorm is a great way to meet people, and can give you something fun to do while you get adjusted to life in college and learning your way around Athens.
You could have a party to meet people or for a variety of other occasions.
Don't have tickets for game day? Round up your buddies and some nachos or hot dogs and watch it together on TV.
Don't feel like going out? Pop some popcorn, grab "The Notebook" and a few issues of "Cosmo" and have a slumber party.
Or for the guys, insert "Wedding Crashers" and your favorite game console into the mix.
Do you have stuff you don't want now that you're in college? Host a swap meet with those on your hall.
Do you like to compete? Have a game night, and bring the classics like Scrabble, Taboo and Pictionary, or just play cards.
The possibilities are endless. Just come up with a theme and start planning.
While I'm sure this sounds great, there are obviously a few limitations. Here are some helpful hints.
Unless you want to be fighting for air, don't invite more than 10 people. If you have a lot of friends, check with your Resident Assistant and have it in the hall.
Or find a lounge and have it there. You don't want to ruin a good time because everyone's too cramped to have fun.
With such strict rules about paint and putting holes in the wall, your dorm room isn't exactly the best venue for entertaining. But you can make it work!
One way to set the party mood is with lighting. Get a string of Christmas lights and hang them around the room. Or get a paper lantern.
Since there will also be very limited seating, you will want to make your guests as comfortable as possible as most of them will be sitting on the floor.
Grab as many pillows and bean bag chairs as you can find, even if you have to borrow some from your neighbors.
You'll also need food of some sort. You don't have to break the bank, but at least try to have something like chips and a liter of soda.
You can save money by having a mini-potluck and asking your guests to bring snacks.
And don't forget about the music. Break out your iTunes and make a playlist to keep everyone in a good mood. Just make sure it isn't "quiet hours" first.
With a small budget and time on your hands, hosting a party in your dorm room can be a good way to meet people on your hall and have fun.
