Students are often faced with the dilemma of trying to balance the rigors of an academic and a social life.
Many are involved in student organizations which cater to a variety of interests. Some of these organizations offer members the opportunity to spend time volunteering within Athens.
Volunteer organizations range from tutoring to building houses and with a myriad of organizations available, there is an opportunity to make a difference. One way to locate these organizations is through Volunteer UGA.
Formed in 2004, Volunteer UGA is the volunteer center and home to 10 different student organizations. Some of the organizations include education-related opportunities such as Tutoring Our Tomorrows and Students Helping Teachers.
One organization that has attracted a lot of student interest is the annual Relay for Life.
Relay for Life is an overnight event helping to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
Although volunteer organizations offer a chance to work with a specific issue, most student organizations have service projects during the semester allowing their members to give back to the community and fundraise.
Through September, the Classic City Kiwanis Club will be selling Georgia sports caps through www.GeorgiaSportsCaps.com
"The ability to tie in the community and UGA is beneficial and the money raised goes back to helping children in the community," said Pete Barkelew, public relations and publicity chairman of the Classic City Kiwanis Club.
A portion of the proceeds will benefit local kids through Special Olympics and children afflicted with cancer through the Clute Barrow Nelson Life Foundation.
