Kappa Alpha became the fourth Lumpkin Street fraternity to turn over its house title to the University upon relocation, said Vice President for Student Affairs Rodney Bennett. The fraternity settled its claim for $600,000 on July 31.

The only Lumpkin Street fraternities with unsettled title claims are Chi Phi and Sigma Chi.

Sigma Chi signed a 40 year renewable lease in 1996.

"We're hoping to hear from (Chi Phi) in September," Bennett said, but "as of right now, there is no settlement."

Three other Lumpkin Street fraternities, Tau Epsilon Phi, Phi Delta Theta and Pi Kappa Alpha, already have agreed to settle their claims.

Kappa Alpha opted to build a new house off campus. The others have agreed to move to River Road, according to letters sent from the fraternities to Bennett this summer.

The University plans to use the Lumpkin Street property for academic buildings. Bennett said there is no timetable for the construction, and the University has agreed to allow the fraternities to remain until construction is complete.
