Donation made to increase equine research


The University's College of Veterinary Medicine received a donation of $1 million in July. The donation was made by Marguerite Hodgson, an Athens native and life-long horse lover. The donation will be used to endow a chair of equine studies at the University. Research will be conducted at the College of Veterinary Medicine to study the diseases and specific conditions that affect horses.

Georgia Center appoints new director


William R. Crowe, president of Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas, will become director of the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel at the University of Georgia on Oct. 1. Crowe will succeed Robert Leiter, who retires Sept. 19.

Univ. receives research grant


University Cancer Center researchers are conducting research to improve means of early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer - one of the most deadly forms of cancer. The research is funded by the $2.1 million grant from the National Institutes of Health.

Prof. works to catalog genes


University forest biotechnology professor, Jeffrey Dean, is working to expand the genetic knowledge relating to pines and other conifers. Dean's goal is to produce a catalogue of all genes expressed as conifers grow and respond to the environment.

Meeting held to discuss facility


A meeting to discuss the environmental issues relating to the proposed National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility will be held Aug. 30 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel's rooms K and L. Athens is one of five finalists to serve as the location for NBAF. The meeting will be held by the University and Athens Grow Green Coalition.
