For most music fans, a chance to perform with their favorite band is a dream come true.

Garbage Island is hosting a benefit concert where fans will be asked to perform with them on stage.

GARBAGE ISLAND

When: 9 tonight
Where: 40 Watt Club
Price: $5
More information: www.nuci.org
The concert, tagged "Every Man is an Island," will take place tonight at the 40 Watt Club.

Front man Craig Lieske said local musicians and Nuçi's Space inspired them to hold the concert.

"Musicians in town kept saying, 'hey, I wanna sit in with you,'" Lieske said. "Nuçi's Space is such a unique and great place - not too many towns have organizations like this."

All proceeds will go to Nuçi's Space, a support center dedicated to promoting the emotional, physical and occupational well-being of the Athens music community, said Will Kiser, a Nuçi's staff member.

Lieske said the concert would "kill two birds with one stone" by helping Nuçi's and giving musicians an opportunity to play with the band.

Although Kiser said Garbage Island's formation was "accidental," some people hold them in high esteem.

"They are a really hard-working band and are well-respected among other musicians," Kiser said.

University alumni affiliated with Nuçi's said they think the benefit concert is a good idea.

"Benefit concerts are a fantastic idea because they combine elements of fun and philanthropy," said Josh Couillard, a former Nuçi's volunteer.

"Craig (Lieske) knows so many people," Kiser said. "A lot of people who have always wanted to play with him are eager about the event."

Most of the bands are scheduled to perform, but impromptu performances will be encouraged.
