The largest University political organizations - Young Democrats and College Republicans - are in full swing preparing for the upcoming November 2008 presidential elections. The organizations are holding weekly meetings, hosting guest speakers and planning campaign contributions to prepare students for elections.

Payton Bradford, a junior from Rome and president of Young Democrats, is in charge of motivating and encouraging students to become an "active, hard-working, committed group" of young people.

"Young Democrats has historically participated in events related to local and state elections," he said. "We are interested in broadening this effort next semester as campaigns launch and opportunities open up. Our focus is not just politics - it is also the students."

The chairman of College Republicans, David Ballard, a graduate student from Fayetteville, oversees the largest College Republicans chapter in the U.S. while seeking to "develop the political and leadership abilities" of its members.

"College Republicans wants to get its members excited about the issues. We want our members on the ground floor of local, state and national Republican campaigns. There is something for everyone - whether it be campaigning, debating, going door to door, or discussing the issues," Ballard said.

Each group offers promotion within the organization and both said they strive to foster a deep passion for the issues as well as their respective parties.

"Young Democrats has always promoted involvement during the meetings," said Bradford. "We have seen the membership grow substantially, which means more opportunities."

"College Republican's main goal [for 2008] is to gain numbers in order to increase our ability to impact the elections as well as the community," Ballard said.

Well, if the College Republicans really want to Support President Bush, why haven't they at least urged their healthy heterosexual male members to volunteer for military service?
