Got a plan? Put it in action
Mary Catherine McLean took a giant step for her beliefs and petitioned Congress for more funding for breast cancer research. Her determination is something to be admired. We encourage you to voice your opinions to your mayor, state and national representatives or governor - the ones who put your beliefs in motion.
Teacher earns Regents Award
Congratulations to Marguerite Brickman, an associate professor of plant biology, for winning the 2007 Regents Award for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. You certainly earned it. Your innovative and interesting teaching methods are a blueprint for model teaching, and hopefully other professors will follow suit.
We've got spirit, yes we do
There are those who think Bulldog fans did not show their true spirit last weekend, whether by not showing up to the Western Carolina game or leaving it early. Now that we have an away game in Tuscaloosa against Alabama, we encourage everyone to take it easy, enjoy the game on TV, and return to Sanford next Saturday ready to yell their heads off.
Locally grown takes our greens
In honor of "Eat Local Week," we vow to try at least one locally grown special at a participating downtown restaurant this weekend. After that, though, it's back to the supermarket for us. Kroger plus card and coupons, anyone? We love the idea of locally grown food, but the current price gap simply is too wide for us college students to afford. Unfortunately, eating green means more greenbacks.
Greek Life under new management
Vice President for Student Affairs Rodney Bennett moved the Greek Life Office Tuesday closer under his watch. Its location will remain in Memorial Hall but will answer to his assistant, Eric Atkinson. As Bennett tucked the Greeks under his wings, he called the change a "natural evolution." We think that means the crack of his whip won't have to reach far to keep those rascals in line.
You say potato gun, they say felony
Jimmy Williamson, chief of University Police, sent out an e-mail Tuesday night to students, faculty and staff about the campus weapons policy. Designed to make our campus safer, the list of prohibited weapons ranges from bombs and guns to paintball and BB guns, and we encourage everyone to read the policy. While you might think your paintball gun is a recreational tool, you could be slapped with a felony charge - a heavy penalty of 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Quote of the week: "I'm not asking you to hold hands when crossing the street, but please, be smart and be safe. Although ladies, if you want to hold hands, I'm available 24/7."
- Kirk Carter espousing on the wisdom of walking across the street in his Sept. 17 column, "Pedestrians, cross with safety."
