Lady Dogs 'dig out a win' versus Volunteers
The Georgia volleyball team's SEC home opening weekend was not sweet, but it certainly wasn't bitter. After dropping its first conference home match to Kentucky 3-1, the Bulldogs rallied to defeat Tennessee 3-2 on Sunday. The Bulldogs (11-3, 2-2) fell hard against Kentucky, 30-6, 30-24, 23-30, 30-20. Head coach Joel McCartney called the loss "very disappointing" and said "that his team needed to regroup."
And regroup it did, fighting the Volunteers (7-4, 2-2) tooth-and-nail in five games, with the largest margin of victory being seven points.
In game one, the teams battled hard, but a late rally by Tennessee gave it the 30-25 win. In game two, the Bulldogs came out hungry with a 12-2 lead and held off the Volunteers 30-23.
After dropping a tough third game 30-28, the team regrouped and won a hard-fought game four 30-26 to force its first game five of the season.
After the Volunteers went up 8-6 in the final game, freshman Erica Clark came through with three kills to help the Bulldogs dig out a win.
Junior Maria Taylor led the team with 31 kills, and senior Renee Johnson led the team with 29 digs.
Women's soccer continues streakThe Georgia soccer team owned a 5-0 record against Mercer heading into its weekend match-up in Macon. Sunday was no exception.
Sophomore Olivia West scored less than two minutes before halftime, and the Bulldogs (7-1) applied stifling defense, not conceding a corner kick and allowing only two shots on goal the entire game, to defeat Mercer (2-3-1).
The victory moved Georgia to a 7-1 record, the team's best start since 1999.
On the game's only goal, senior Joni Vickers found sophomore Lindsay Stein on the left side of the goal box. Stein then passed the ball across to West, who buried it into the net.
"I commend Lindsay Stein for creating the scoring chance we were looking for and Olivia West for slotting the eventual game winning goal," head coach Patrick Baker said in a news release.
"Additionally, Megan Tomlinson, Kelli Corless and Joni Vickers were fantastic in their 90 minutes of play."
"Unfortunately, today showed a repeat performance of Thursday night," Baker said. "We managed to score a timely goal, keep another shutout and come away injury-free. Across the board we need to be better in the back, more sophisticated in the midfield and more dynamic up top if we have any hopes of winning a game in the SEC."
Georgia doesn't have much time to improve, as the No. 12 Florida Gators (4-2-1) come to Athens on Friday.
Teams end strong with wins at home
Both Georgia cross country teams had strong showings in their first home meet in four years Saturday, with the women's team taking the top prize and the men's team pulling down a second-place finish.
The 13th-ranked women's team finished first behind second-, third-, fourth-, fifth- and sixth-place individual finishes in the 5K race.
"Our goal for the women today was to try and win our home invitational while still preserving ourselves ... for next weekend," coach Dave Hartman said in a news release.
Senior Ryley Miller paced the Bulldog men, finishing third overall to push his team into its runner-up finish at the University Golf Course.
