Athens-Clarke County Police say they are investigating a string of recent sexual assault cases. The investigation comes at the heels of a Friday television broadcast in which a female University student told WSB-TV Atlanta on camera that she was the victim of a "serial sexual predator."

ACC Maj. Mark Sizemore would not comment Monday on the number of or background of the cases because they still are under investigation, he said.

"We're interviewing those individuals to try to determine what happened to them. We're continuing to investigate it," he said. "I don't know how similar their circumstances are and certainly don't want to scare anyone away with a report."

Sizemore said investigators have not determined whether this is a "serial rape case."

The 19-year-old female refused to speak with The Red & Black Monday for attribution.

The following was taken from WSB-TV's broadcast:

The female said in July she met an acquaintance at a bar in Athens. He gave her a Corona, and she believes he put a drug in her drink, she said. It was her third beverage of the night.

She later awoke at the house of the man, who is in his 30s. She was wearing a T-shirt, and he was touching her, she said.

After she reported the incident in July, the female said she found two other females who reported similar experiences with the same man.

ACC investigators have not charged the suspect.

The female's attorney, Catherine Baity, refused to comment at the request of the female.

I seem to recall a similar story in the Red and Black a few months back so this doesn't really seem to be a secret. Not to blame the "victim", but having three drinks and then going home with someone you just met can easily set you up for something you don't want to happen. (Continued…)

coastaldawg, it does sound like you are trying to blame the victim...no matter WHAT condition a person is in, no one has the right to force sexual activities on them. (Continued…)

I'm not excusing the behavior of the suspect in this case; however, the simple fact of the matter is that if the victim had not been consuming alcohol illegally, this would not have happened. (Continued…)

"The problem with investigating rapes or other forms of sexual assault is that most of the time the victim does not want to cooperate. They don't want to provide the police with any information that may assist them in finding out who is responsible. (Continued…)
