Emerson Dameron
WUOG Alumnus
Emerson Dameron left WUOG to co-found the Chicago Undergro-und Library, an online archive of self and small press-published works in Chicago that, if left to major publishing companies and libraries, would go unread. Dameron also works as publicist for fellow WUOG alumnus DJ Danger Mouse, better known as one-half of Grammy-award winning pop music duo Gnarls Barkley.
Q: What type of shows did you host while you were a DJ?
A: "I remember hosting a specialty show where I got to play anything I wanted for two hours, so I would play KFC employee-training tapes and other random stuff."
Q: How have your experiences shaped your current career?
A: "I had so much fun experimenting, and I realized that life revolves around having fun - that's why I don't have a formal career path."
Kurt Wood
WUOG Alumnus
Kurt Wood is a more locally famous WUOG alumnus whose exper-ience at the station has shaped his later career as a musician in his own band The Woggles and now as a local DJ.
As a University student, he worked at the radio station for three years. His position as music director gave him the opportunity to air music from non-mainstream bands under WUOG's music philosophy.
Q: What type of shows did you host as a DJ?
A: "I hosted the first new wave rock show in 1978. At that time, the station only played jazz, folk music and progressive rock.
"Most people didn't like new wave rock music, and mainstream radio wouldn't play it, so I played it."
Q: All these years later, do you still believe in the music philosophy of WUOG?
A: "Better music is being made by artists who aren't at the top."
