A University student arraigned in court Monday remains in jail for soliciting sex from someone he believed to be a 15-year-old girl, police said.

Peachtree City Police arrested Joseph Fitzgerald Carroll on Friday after he solicited sex on the Internet and traveled to Peachtree City to meet the girl, Chief Jim Murray said Monday in a telephone interview. The girl was an undercover police officer.

Carroll, 22, was charged with violation of the Computer Pornography and Child Exploitation Prevention Act of 1999.

He could be released on $75,000 bond and on the condition he not use the Internet, Murray said, but had not posted bail Monday afternoon.

Murray said Peachtree City Police and the Georgia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force began the operation to catch child predators in May 2004 and have arrested 22 people. Carroll is the second University student arrested as part of the police department's ongoing Internet sting on child predators.

In September, University doctoral student Govinda Bahadur Basnet pleaded guilty to computer pornography charges. Peachtree City Police arrested Basnet, 41, in December 2006 after he sent a naked photo of himself through e-mail and enticed who he thought was a 15-year-old girl for sex.

Murray said others arrested in the sting include students from Georgia Tech, Georgia State University and the superintendent of the Pike County School System.

Its not entrapment unless the govenment agent INITIATES te inapropriate contact. In these cases the govenment agent sits and waits for people to contact them and then states the age. (Continued…)

What is wrong with these people? They go to school with about 15,000 of the most beautiful women on earth. Just ask Kirk Herbstreit. Why would you ever look elsewhere to meet women or in their case, children?

pshep,
that kind of thinking is exactly what these people are thinking. That is wrong! A child is a gift and no one wants harm to come to them.
