Custodian charged with theft, weapon

A University custodial worker was arrested and charged with possession of a weapon on campus early Tuesday morning in the River Road commuter lot.
Tony Machelle Johnson, 46, also was charged with two counts of theft by taking at 2:17 a.m.
Johnson had a .38 caliber revolver in his vehicle, but it was not in a locked container, said University Lt. Lisa Boone.
The University's weapons policy says faculty, staff and visitors can carry a weapon in their vehicles as long as they have a license and keep the weapon in a locked container, according to the University Police Web site.
Johnson is a South Campus custodial worker. A fellow South Campus custodial worker called police and reported suspicious activity in the River Road lot.
University Officer David Graham reported to the scene at 1:45 a.m. and located the weapon. He recovered two stolen items - an electrical cable and a bottle of ready-to-use degreaser.
The recovered items were valued at $36.
Johnson was transported to the Clarke County Jail and booked at 3:11 a.m.
